160th Anniversary Show of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia

160th Anniversary Show of the Photographic Society of Philadelphia

In 1862, the Photographic Society of Philadelphia was formed.

Famous distinguished members from the past include: Constant Guillou, amateur photographer; Coleman Sellers, inventor of the Kinematoscope; Dr. Paul Beck Goddard, who in 1839 made the world’s first instantaneous photograph; John Carbutt, inventor of the gelatin dry plate and celluloid cut film, and Frederick E. Ives, distinguished scientist.

The initial objective of the Society was “to increase and diffuse knowledge of the natural laws which relate to the action of light, and particularly to promote improvements in the art of photography.” Developed 160 years ago, this philosophy is as fresh as if it had been written today.

I'm thrilled to have work again in this annual show now that in-person exhibits have resumed!

My 3 pieces on exhibit are:

* Our Lady of Congress Hall (Cape May, NJ), archival pigment print (shown in thumbnail)

* Lace Silhouettes Lingerie, chromogenic print

* #philly_mannequins get married, archival pigment print

Photography 41 Exhibition - "Looking Up"

  • Perkins Center for the Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

I’m honored to have my work included as one of 40 out of 95 entries into the 2022 Photography 41 Exhibit, “Looking Up”, at Perkins Center for the Arts. My photo, “Petrichor”, archival pigment print, was captured in the Cape May Nature Preserve using my Holga 120 on black-and-white 120 medium format film. This image connects with the theme of “Looking Up” because my walks through the nature preserve are meditative - they allow for introspection, a chance to ‘reset’, and bring forth feelings of hope, optimism, and peace.

Juried by Jim Graham of Power Plant Productions.

Works on display through Friday, February 25th at 2 PM. Gallery hours are Monday – Friday from 10 AM- 2 PM., and Saturday from 12-4 PM. The opening reception is on Saturday, February 12 from 5-8 PM.

“Where does your imagination take you? How can you push the limits of your chosen mediums? What ways of creating do you want to explore? What ideas and emotions can you capture? What are subjects you want to attempt and can easily finish on this smaller scale?”

Inspired by Great Artists

“Be inspired by someone you consider a great artist.  This person can be someone recognized by the art books or critics as “great” or it can be someone whose work you personally consider to be “great”.  Your work can be inspired in whole or in part by one or several artists. In fact, we are already influenced by great artists who changed how art was created, consciously or not.”

My piece in INSPIRED BY GREAT ARTISTS: “God Bless America”, 20” x 16”, archival pigment print, 2014, was inspired by the work of photographers Robert Frank and Lee Friedlander.

Join me for the Sunday Salon exhibition discussion via Zoom on September 27th from 1-3 PM.

BLUES

The artist community was asked to share their vision of Blues.  Blue refers to a wide range of hues:  azure, ultramarine blue, teal, turquoise, cobalt blue, Prussian blue, ranging from red/purple-blue,  green-blue, and more black/blue.  Blue as a term can be associated with harmony, distance, the sky and ocean, cold, sadness, and/or calm.  It is a cool color, in contrast to the warm colors of reds and yellows.

BLUES, the August online exhibition will be on view from Sunday, August 2 - ongoing, with a Third Sunday Salon discussion on August 16, 1 PM - 3 PM.

My piece, “Akimbo”, 2020, collage + mixed media

Colors / Shapes of Summer

The Plastic Club asked the community to share their vision of the Colors/Shapes of Summer.

The work in this show includes figurative and abstract work, and runs the gamut from realism to surrealism to works of pure imagination. We are thrilled and awed by the wide variety of media submitted, from actual floral arrangements to fabric, wood, mixed media, collage, and found objects, photography and digital graphics as well as traditional oil, acrylic, watercolor and pastels.

Exhibitions Chair Roberta Gross will host a gallery talk and reception via Zoom at the Third Sunday Salon on July 19th beginning at 1 PM.

My piece: “Lilies In Blue”, cyanotype, 8” x 6” (framed) / 5” x 7” (unframed).

Banished for the Good of the Realm

Banished For the Good of the Realm is a virtual exhibition highlighting work from InLiquid’s artist members that they have made during the unprecedented stay-at-home order during the Spring of 2020. So many members have used this time to delve deeply into their studio practice and use this as a time to produce new works, explore new materials, or just play.

I’m honored to have the opportunity to include my piece, “21st Century Fallout Shelter (This Is Not A Dress Rehearsal”, a digital photo collage I created right after the lockdown order came into place. I felt the urge to create art as if my life depended on it, and the feeling continues.
